When deciding on publish an MMO, there is more to consider than the game itself and making money on it. There is also the community, the real world and law. On top of that, you also have available the work of players who have researched, analyzed and in some cases gushed over the years, the game.
Us, the authors of this blog told all over again to Acclaim people, that what they do with the community and game is wrong. They have many vulnerable points that can bust out anytime and create chaos. But, of course, we were considered ‘trolls’ spreading ‘conspiracy theories’. Because we didn’t stand back and we supported with arguments our point of view, we were baned on forum and threaten that we will baned in game too. Well, we are not sorry fot that, because in the end, like it is in this case, seems we said the truth and had right all the way.
I don’t like to ‘try look smart’ now and say: ” I told you so… “, but let’s remember :
1. July, 11, 2010 I wrote on this blog: ” FTC Report to US Congress, Finds “Violently Explicit Content” in 9Dragons”.
2. July 23, 2010, Acclaim Sparta wrote on 9D forum :
Acclaim has implemented a new policy yesterday for all Acclaim games that we require players to be at least 13 years old to play. The changes have been deployed to all of our websites to prevent underage players from registering:
If a player enters an age under 13, they get an error message and a cookie is created preventing them from just changing the age and trying to register again. We are marking as “Inactive” status all existing player accounts whose age falls in this criteria.Players may contact firstname.lastname@example.org about the changes on their existing accounts or attempted registrations.
3. August 2, 2010, Fugen wrote on 9D forum :
As many of you know, we recently banned all accounts that were registered when the person was under the age of 13. We require you to be at least 13 years of age to register and play 9Dragons.This is due to Federal Trade Commission regulations.This means that if you were under 13 at the time of registration even if you’re over 13 now, we have to ban your account. It does not matter how old you are; if you were 13 or under when you first registered, we cannot unban you. Again, this is due to government regulations. We appreciate your understanding.
How come this ‘troll blog’ how they like to call it knew it before Acclaim ? 4 people vs Acclaime ‘official specialists team’ can do a better work or wait… we are from US Congress…? Who are in reality, the trolls and the specialists? I think you already know the answer. This thing could have been avoid it,if only Acclaim had chosen the right people to work with. They all laugh on us and the law and now they hit the floor for the first time and is bad. From the topics answers on 9D forum, we can see easily that they can’t handle the situation in a crisis point. The explanations provided by ‘official team’ are not enough and are not substantially motivated because they don’t know how to do it. In fact, the only reason that Fugen is giving us… is : ‘ this is due to government regulations’.
I read there some hallucinating and imbecile explanations from moderators and VGMs like the law has changed and ‘poor’ Acclaim didn’t knew it and now they have to apply it. The law was there long before this. Federal Trade Commission only released the results of a congressionally mandated report looking into incidence of sexually and violently explicit content in online virtual worlds and made five recommendations to virtual world operators (including Acclaim) to “reduce the risk of youth exposure to explicit content :
1. Use more effective age-screening mechanisms to prevent children from registering in adult virtual worlds;
2. Use or enhance age-segregation techniques to make sure that people interact only with others in their age group;
3. Re-examine language filters to ensure that they detect and eliminate messages that violate rules of behavior in virtual worlds;
4. Provide more guidance to community enforcers in virtual worlds so they are better able to review and rate virtual world content, report potential underage users, and report any users who appear to be violating rules of behavior; and
5. Employ a staff of specially trained moderators who are equipped to take swift action against rule violations.
So , Acclaim started with the first one… I wonder what will happen when they will reach the 5th one… I said in post and I will say it again now :
So, let’s say congratulations to 9DRAGONS OFFICIAL TEAM for how ’professional’ they manage the community, ending as negative example in US Congress. Only Hermit, Fugen (let’s not forget BluFlash and Historian, Fugen is ‘new’, but he do the things in same way), drakenfyre aka 9D Bleez or whatever she calls herself now and the full bunch of anime, manga, vampire freaks aka the ‘muppets official team’ can have such a performance. Clap hands for you all, you deserve it!
So, Acclaim has learned a lesson from this whole episode ? The future will tell. As for me and the rest of the authors, we got sick and tired to try help Acclaim that we will not do it anymore. If they want help, they should take it to PMs !
